Dr Marion Metcalfe of Madeley lived in the area for 65 years and worked as a GP, and subsequently as a physiotherapist until the end of her life.

She died in a nursing home in Telford.

Dr Metcalfe was chairman of Shropshire's Money Advice Service, chairman of Telford Town Centre Citizen's Advice Bureau, first chairman of Madeley CAB when it was set up in 1972, and chairman of Shropshire Marriage Guidance Council.

She served at Madeley Medical Practice and Sutton Hill Medical Practice, retiring in October 1985, having been 34 years in practice locally and first qualifying as a doctor in 1944. She moved around a great deal in her youth, coming to Telford from High Wycombe.

Dr Metcalfe retired from Telford magistrates in 1991 after 30 years' service as a magistrate. She had been first appointed to the Wenlock bench in 1961, and became its chairman, and was deputy chairman of the Telford bench from 1986.

She was a representative on the Magistrates Courts Committee since 1975 and served as chairman of the Wenlock juvenile panel for seven years.

Another of her many roles was with St John Ambulance - she was invested as serving sister at an Order of St John investiture ceremony in London - and she also served on the Community Council of Telford.

Survived by her daughter, three sons, and seven grandchildren, a service to celebrate her life took place at St Michael's Church, Madeley, on Wednesday, April 5.
