Some 37 eager combatants converged on the Bridges pub at Ratlinghope from as far away as Oswestry, Bicton and Caynham, for the Upper Onny Valley Conkers Tournament.

Organiser Ben Rodway, said it was the perfect conker playing day, a bright and sunny autumnal afternoon, "yet cold enough that a few bruises to knuckles and knees to keep the blood flowing were welcome".

The eventual conker-er and first senior champion was Cecil Moores of Linley, with his brother Walt taking the junior crown.
