Shrewsbury's controversial multi-million pound relief road project will be discussed at an 'extraordinary' council meeting.

Shrewsbury Town Council's planning committee has scheduled the meeting, to discuss the North West Relief Road, for Monday evening.

The meeting will be streamed live online, with the public able to watch proceedings, which start at 6pm.

The plan for the road, from Shropshire Council, has attracted significant criticism, with thousands of objections submitted as part of the consultation.

Support for the road was seen as one of the key reasons for the defeat of former Shropshire Council Conservative leader, Peter Nutting in this month's elections.

The budget for the road is currently £87 million, and if the plans are approved, the four-mile highway would stretch from Churncote Roundabout to Battlefield and would effectively complete a ring-road around Shrewsbury – although the new section would be single carriageway.

Shrewsbury Town Council is expected to outline its stance on the road following the committee meeting.
