Councillors want assurances over the midwife led unit's future after the decision was taken to shut it overnight, along with Ludlow and Bridgnorth for at least three months and up to six months.

While pre and post-natal care will still be available at the unit during the day there will be no deliveries and new mothers can no longer be transferred to Oswestry from Telford if they have their baby there.

Oswestry mayor, Councillor Vince Hunt, said he had invited the chief executive of SATH, Simon Wright to Monday's meeting at the Guildhall but had not yet had a response to the invitation.

Last weekend about 300 protestors walked from Oswestry to the unit, housed in the grounds of the Orthopaedic hospital in Gobowen as part of a campaign to see it fully re-opened.
