Roadworks kept to minimum
The state of one of Oswestry's main town centre streets is not as bad as first feared.
An initial survey of English Walls and Smithfield Street found evidence that the road surface could be in an "alarming" condition.
But town councillors have now been told that follow up tests have shown less pessimistic results.
It means that work to repair the road should only take up to 10 days.
Shropshire Council's engineering consultants, Mouchel, originally said that the works could take up to two months.
On Wednesday the town council's planning committee heard from senior engineer Ben Corfield.
In an email to the council he said he ordered more tests after not being convinced over the original core samples.
"We now have a more positive picture in that the surface is thicker than originally thought," he said.
He said a new option was to put two layers of surfacing on the road which would see it through until Oswestry's townscape and transport forum had finished its survey of the town centre traffic system.
"It will take one to one and a half weeks and the work can be undertaken at night to avoid disruption to the town centre during the day."
Councillors are to contact Mouchel to ask that as much equipment can be taken off site during the day.
The work is likely to take place in August or September.
