A jury at Shrewsbury Crown Court found Brad Birch, 21, of Red Bank Road, Market Drayton, not guilty of assaulting Samuel Almond, causing him actual bodily harm, and being in possession of a knife.

He had denied both offences.

The jury was told that Mr Almond was walking down Shrewsbury Road in Market Drayton with a group of his family and friends in the early hours of July 2 last year, after leaving the Joiners Arms pub.

His girlfriend and another member of their group were attacked by Birch’s girlfriend Kara Green.

It was alleged that Mr Birch then punched Mr Almond then hit him on the head with a knife.

In a police interview, Mr Birch said he had been the one attacked by Mr Almond’s group and that he had acted in self defence. He denied carrying a knife.

Kara Green, 18, of Shrewsbury Road, Market Drayton, has pleaded guilty to assaulting Lace Stance and Kirsty Sivill.

She stands to be sentenced at a later date.
