Bernie Hutchinson, auctioneer, reports on the barren cows and OTMS sale at Market Drayton Livestock Market.

"Just when you thought there could be no more barren cows in the Midlands another 400 turn up and sell in blinding trade averaging 89p," he said.

"Top of the trade was a well contested title this week with a steer from a regular Cheshire vendor achieving 121p to gross £621.94.

"Suckler cows also hit the heights reaching 115p for Mr G. Proctor of New Woodhouses Farm.

"A special entry of 38 over-age bulls brightened up the sea of black and white cows and sold well with two to 108p and others to 107p, 103p and 100p for a regular vendor.

"Dairies were still flying off the shelves with 250 entered averaging 72p and topping the trade at 100.5p. A well fleshed Friesian cow from Mr M. E. G. Bennett of Woodseaves for the top priced dairy grossed out at £734.

"Many thanks to all 140 vendors, you have done the market proud with the largest barren sale in the books.
