Farm walk to benefit canal
Farmers with land in the Montgomery Canal catchment can find out about a new project to save money and improve the environmental health of the canal by going along to a free farm walk at Morton Farm near Oswestry on Wednesday September 13.
Farmers with land in the Montgomery Canal catchment can find out about a new project to save money and improve the environmental health of the canal by going along to a free farm walk at Morton Farm near Oswestry on Wednesday September 13.
The Montgomery Canal and surrounding land is part of an important SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest).
As well as having high environmental status, the canal also attracts thousands of tourist pounds to the local economy.
But it is currently threatened by high levels of nutrients entering the watercourse from farms in and around the SSSI and from boats travelling on it.
The project will be offering free one-to-one visits to help farmers prevent nutrient loss and save money with the focus on improving nutrient management, making better use of manures and reducing fertiliser bills.
The walk will also include information on Environmental Stewardship opportunities.
The walk is being organised by ADAS in conjunction with Natural England as part of the Defra-funded Environment Sensitive Farming initiative
