The National Trust property's gardens were cleared during the morning when the package was spotted on the fence line.

Local police were contacted and they in turn requested help from the specialist bomb disposal team.

Visitor services manager at the castle, Mr John Hignett, said the package was found to be safe and was collected up and the gardens reopened.

"There was no incident and it was simply frustrating that the gardens had to be closed to the public for a short time," he said.

"We followed our instructions for dealing with suspicious packages and the police in turn followed their procedures."
