Richard Perry made the shock discovery when he was clearing out his late father-in-law's home in Childs Ercall, near Newport.
Unsure what the device was, Mr Perry and his daughter Julia Perry lifted it onto a chest of drawers for a closer inspection before deciding to call the police.
Military bomb disposal experts were drafted in to the property, called Fields House, and a controlled explosion was carried out at about 7pm yesterday, leaving a crater in the ground.
It is not known how long the bomb had been in the shed.
