Fire crews were called out to Much Wenlock Road, Much Wenlock, at 7.50am. Drivers faced long delays after the crash knocked down power cables, with the road still closed more than two hours after the smash.

Fire crews from Much Wenlock went to the scene along with two pumps from Telford and a rescue tender from Wellington.

Firefighters used cutting equipment to release the man from the car.

He was taken by ambulance to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital where his condition was described as stable.

West Mercia Police spokesman Richard Ewels said: "One vehicle only was involved, a Peugeot 206, which left the road.

"The collision was reported to us by the ambulance service at 7.50am.

"The male driver, the only occupant, had to be released and was taken to hospital. His condition is stable.

"The road was closed and is still closed as the vehicle is having to be recovered from the ditch.

"A post supporting overhead cables was also damaged and the electricity company is having to make that safe, so the road will be closed for a little while longer."
