The new, 300-pupil school will receive 50 per cent of its funding from the assembly, with the rest from Powys County Council.

The new school, which will replace the existing Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd, will be built on a site next door to Newtown High School on Dolfor Road in the town.

Councillor Barry Thomas, leader of Powys County Council, said: "We are delighted to announce that we have received confirmation that the Welsh Government will provide half of the funding needed for a much needed replacement Welsh-medium school in Newtown.

"The timing of the news coinciding with the National Eisteddfod, the country's most important cultural and Welsh language event is particularly pleasing."

Ground preparation work connected to the project got under way last month and the new school building is scheduled to be complete by December 2015 with the school officially opening in early 2016.

Work on the main school building will get underway as soon as possible.

Planning permission for the school which will have facilities for multi-agency and community use was granted by the council in March.
