The man in his 50s from Telford was

after police fired a shot.

He was tackled by police dogs before being arrested and later treated at the Princess Royal Hospital for bite wounds.

Armed officers and the dog unit were sent to the scene in High Causeway after a man threatened a patrol officer with what appeared to be a handgun shortly after 4pm on Sunday.

He then tried to enter a home in Stretton Road and threatened officers again – when armed police fired a shot and released the dogs. The bullet did not hit anyone.

Police have been making house-to-house inquiries over the bank holiday weekend and said 'a lot of witnesses' came forward.

Yesterday morning the man was assessed at hospital by a mental health team and detained under the Mental Health Act.

The matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission and West Mercia Police is awaiting a decision on how it wishes the incident to be investigated.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Jamieson said: "We have now completed our work at the scene in Stretton Road, but our inquiries continue, including house-to-house inquiries around Much Wenlock and we have had a lot of witnesses come forward."
