A bank branch in a county market town is to be axed because not enough people use it.

But residents and traders fear the decision by HSBC could drive trade away from Much Wenlock.

Town councillor David Turner and mayor Councillor Tim Pinches are leading moves to persuade the group to reconsider its decision to shut the branch in the High Street on June 18.

Councillor Turner said the decision was bad news for residents and business.

"There has been a complete lack of consultation. Many people did not even know until they went into the bank last week and saw a notice detailing the closure plans.

"We will be left with only Barclays Bank and this is just open four days a week when it used to be open for five."

Councillor Lesley Durbin said she also thought the decision was a mistake.

Mark Hemingway, regional spokesman for HSBC, said it had chosen to close the Much Wenlock branch because it was running at a loss and was under-used.
