Councillors to consider requests from Ginger and Spice Festival at meeting

Councillors in Market Drayton will consider a series of requests from organisers of the town's popular Ginger and Spice Festival for this year's event.

Organiser of the festival, Julia Roberts has written to Market Drayton Town Council seeking permission for a series of plans and proposals.

These include an enquiry into whether the festival could use the Town Hall's facilities so volunteers have somewhere to take a break.

A letter to the town council said the festival is struggling to find any other suitable facility.

The popular event returns on September 27 and will explore the town’s culinary heritage and social history through a mix of events.

Cheshire Street is set to be lined with stalls and entertainers while there will also be several competitions and activities for both children and adults to get involved with.

Councillors will consider requests from the festival's organisers at a meeting of the Community and Governance Committee on Thursday (February 20).

Organiser Julia has written to the town council seeking permission for the festival to include street entertainment and music on the day, alongside permission to use the electricity source under the town's Buttercross for its food theatre set up.

The Ginger and Spice Festival has also requested for public toilets in Market Drayton to be opened from 6am on the day of the festival for traders and contractors to use.

Meanwhile, the festival is requesting to borrow road closure signs for them to be used on Cheshire Street and for the relocation of hanging baskets at the Buttercross to eliminate any fire risk.

And, the council has been asked if the town's mayor and deputy mayor will, once again, judge the festival's gingerbread window display and best stall competitions and officially open the spicy market.
