Taking a walk through history

A series of 14 guided local history walks are being held across Telford and East Shropshire this summer organised by members of Wrekin Local Studies Forum.

The History On Foot walks run through June, July and August, kicking off on June 5 with a two-hour walk titled Talbot Chapel, Newport, led by Linda Fletcher.

Darren Blackburn, secretary of the forum, said: "They have been organised by affiliated members of the forum from groups and societies from Wellington, Newport, Shifnal, Lawley, Aqueduct, Broseley, St Georges, Ketley and Ironbridge. The walks are free, with each walk with a leader exploring local history across the borough."

Other walks are: June 6, Between Coalport and Madeley, led by Neil Clarke; June 12, Revealing More Ketley Historic Gems, led by Maggie Evans; June 16, Lawley and Newdale, led by Darren Blackburn.

June 19, The Anglo-Saxon Eastun (sic) Boundary of Church Aston, led by Bryan Lloyd; July 1, Building the Iron Bridge, 1778 and 1779, led by David de Haan; July 8, Aqueduct Village led by John and Ida White; July 10, The Anglo-Saxon Plesc (sic) Boundary of Newport, led by Bryan Lloyd; July 12, The Women of Shifnal, led by Marilyn Higson.

July 14, Shortwood and Steeraway led by R.E. Hewer assisted by Darren Blackburn; July 19, Little Wenlock Village and Environs, led by Neil Clarke; August 11, Telford, Cadman, and Cinderloo, led by Darren Blackburn with information supplied by Shirley Bruneau.

The date of a further walk, St Georges Trail, is yet to be confirmed.
