Wind farm work could attract £4 million to Mid Wales

More than £4 million could be injected into the local economy during the construction of a wind farm in Mid Wales, according to the developers behind the scheme.

This week initial construction works started on the site at Garreg Lwyd Hill situated between Felindre and Llanbadarn Fynydd south of Newtown, Powys.

Now its project manager has said it could generate more than £4.5 million for the local economy.

British renewable energy company RES is the firm behind the wind farm and wants to hear from local businesses interested in helping to build the 17-turbine farm.

Eager to maximise its use of the local supply chain, RES is calling for expressions of interest to be made as soon as possible to ensure the skills and services of local people and suppliers can be fully considered within the project's progressing construction programme.

Opportunities available at Garreg Lwyd Hill wind farm include: construction materials suppliers, plant and equipment hire contractors and labour hire companies.

RES said construction projects of this nature inevitably require specialist technicians from outside the area, and so local accommodation and catering facilities will also be required for them.

Rob Kemeys, RES project manager, said: "We're keen to identify local suppliers and services that could benefit from this development and want to make sure no-one misses the boat in providing us with their details. That's why we need businesses to get in touch with us as soon as possible, as this will mean we can work with the main contractor on site to maximise opportunities for local people and companies.

"Expenditure in the local economy during the development, construction and operation of wind farms in the UK varies from project to project, but from analysis of RES projects in recent years we would typically expect a 17 turbine scheme like Garreg Lwyd Hill to inject more than £4.5 million into the local economy during development, construction and the first year of project operation."

Works began this week on the creation of a site entrance and access track leading from the A483 to the wind farm site.
