William Parton and his wife Nathalie, 84, met at Hadley Station over a cup of tea.

Mr Parton, 85, said: "I was a booking clerk at Hadley and my wife worked at Lawley Bank Station.

"She was friendly with the girls who worked in the telegraph office and used to come and put the kettle on for them. So that was how we first met.

"The first time we went out together was March 23, 1955, and we went to a show at the Granada Theatre."

The couple were married at Lawley Church on December 17, 1955, and then took the bus from Wellington to London for their honeymoon.

The pair lived for a time with Mrs Parton's father before moving into a house in Red Lake.

They have lived in their current home on Horton Road in Trench for 54 years, as it was formerly a railway cottage. After they were married Mr Parton was station master at Hadley and Trench station, and Mrs Parton was a crossing keeper.

After the railways were closed in 1964, Mr Parton continued to work on stations across the West Midlands, including Wellington, Sutton Coldfield and Shrewsbury, while his wife looked after their son Simon.

The pair marked the anniversary at the Whitehouse Hotel in Telford with a party for 30 of their friends.

Mr Parton said the secret to their long marriage was: "Trust, to love each other and to say yes."
