The 41-year-old-man from Trowbridge in Wiltshire was at the Wales GB rally in Mid Wales with a group of friends.

When he failed to make the rendezvous and could not be raised by phone, his friends started searching the Dyfi Forest before police were called.

With difficult weather conditions ruling out the use of helicopters and darkness falling the police contacted the Aberdyfi search and rescue team.

Police called all local taxi firms and discovered the man had booked a cab and was on his way back to Wiltshire.

The drama happened between Newtown and Machynlleth on Saturday as the rally passed through the region, including Chirk Castle.
