Delays warning for Bridgnorth motorists as week long roadworks to get underway

Motorists in Bridgnorth are being warned to expect delays when a road resurfacing scheme gets under way later this month.

Shropshire Council will begin resurfacing of the Stourbridge Road on November 25 and says it will do everything it can to minimise the impact on users of the road.

The council will be resurfacing Stourbridge Road from its junction with Lodge Lane up to the traffic island by Bridgnorth Aluminium.

The work is scheduled to take no more than five days to complete, but will affect the entrance to the Aldi store, which lies just off where the Stourbridge Road joins the A458.

A spokesman for Shropshire Council said: "The entrance to Aldi is large enough to do in two halves, which means that access to the store will have to be controlled.

"We will try not to block the access totally, but we are going to have to lay away from the A458 roundabout towards the Aldi access, which means the front of the paver will block the access for a few minutes.

"The problem of the resurfacing affecting the store illustrates just one of the problems when new accesses are built so close to existing roundabouts.

"Although the work does impact Aldi, they cannot claim compensation as this is essential highways maintenance and is a primary function of a council.

"Letter drops to the affected residents are scheduled to take place later this week. There is no point providing information too far in advance, as the programme can change, resulting in the information being misleading."

Shropshire Councillor Christian Lea said that he was pleased the work would be taking place and that it was being scheduled at the right time.

He said: "I very much welcome the news that this stretch of Stourbridge Road is going to be resurfaced following on from the resurfacing that took place last year between the junction with Lodge Lane and Hospital Street.

"The condition of the road surface has been deteriorating for a while now and it is pleasing that the work is being undertaken before the onset of winter."

A diversion route will be set up whilst the work is carried out and signs warning drivers of the pending road closure will be erected a few days before the work commences.

Residents of Goodwood Avenue and Castlecroft Gardens will still be able to access their properties while the resurfacing work is being undertaken.

Temporary traffic lights will be required on the A458, but only when the resurfacing work is close to the roundabout.
