Hilltop Honey, which was founded by Scott Davies in Caersws near Newtown in 2011, will be on sale in the stores nationwide from August 17.

Mr Davies said the new contract will triple the scope of his business.

He said: "One British beekeeper who supplies us has added 200 hives to keep pace with the increased demand.

"We are excited to deliver 100 per cent honest, raw British honey to our customers.

"Hilltop Honey is proud to be part of Tesco's initiative to provide locally sourced products to UK consumers."

Siu Hoang, Tesco buying manager for spreads, said: "Honey is a growing area within spreads and our customers are increasingly looking for local, British produce.

"We are very pleased to be working with Hilltop Honey, offering our customers fantastic tasting, local honey.

"In the range, we will have both raw wildflower honey, perfect for drizzling over waffles or using in marinades and a creamed honey, which is a delicious spread on toast."

Mr Davies hit the headlines last year when Prime Minister David Cameron quizzed him on whether honey would make him better in bed.

Mr Davies was giving out jars of his honey to world leaders including Mr Cameron and US president Barack Obama at a Nato conference in South Wales.

When he handed Mr Cameron his pot, the Prime Minister asked: "Will the honey make me better in bed?"

At the time, Mr Davies said: "He came over and asked me a few questions and we were having a laugh and a joke. Then he said 'Will it make me better in bed?' and laughed. I said 'It can do whatever you want it to, mate, it'll do whatever you want' and after that I had no idea what to say to him, I was gobsmacked.

"He seemed really nice and the business has received a boost since then so maybe he was on to something."

Mr Davies started his firm in the back garden of his parents' house. He added: "By the time September 2011 came around I knew that keeping bees and selling honey was what I wanted to do for a living."
