For his late father, Glyn, was president exactly 30 years ago.

Mr Evans, 71, has been involved in the one-day event since he first exhibited sheep there at the age of 16. And he says encouraging people to become involved from a young age is one of the reasons that the event, which this year is being held at the Park Hall Showground on August 1, has continued to be successful.

He first became involved as a member of Whittington Young Farmers' Club and then went on to help his father to show Ayrshire cattle, and Texel and Half Bred Sheep.

"We have always believed that getting the youngsters involved with Oswestry Show is vital, whether competition or volunteering," he said. "If young people are given responsibility they are more likely to remain involved, rather than us older ones holding all the reins."

The Oswestry and District Agricultural Society also owns the Park Hall Showground, which he says has helped secure the show's future.

The Evans family have a long and successful history of showing at Oswestry with his wife Margaret and daughter Wendy exhibiting Working Hunter Ponies and Hunters.

Meanwhile, Mr Evans and his sons Richard and Tudor have excelled in the Border Sheep Section breeding award-winning Border Leicester Sheep.
