Work begins on Newtown apartments for elderly and vulnerable
Work has started on a new 39-apartment development that will cater for elderly and vulnerable residents.
The site, off Cambrian Way in Newtown, will provide on-site care for residents and will be on an affordable-rent basis.
The development is being built by Wales & West Housing in partnership with Powys County Council.
Anne Hinchey, chief executive of Wales & West Housing, said: "We are delighted to be working in partnership with Powys County Council to bring extra care housing to the county.
"This scheme will provide much needed, high quality accommodation backed up by on site care and support for elderly and vulnerable people.

"Wales & West Housing is all about making a difference to people's lives, homes and communities and Newtown's extra care scheme will offer an excellent option currently unavailable to the people of Powys."
Councillor Graham Brown, Powys County Council's cabinet member for housing, said: "One of our key objectives is to help people to lead healthy and independent lives. This involves access to appropriate housing and support that best suits their circumstances.
"We are pleased to be working with Wales & West Housing to deliver this important new development. The development will improve the choices to live independently for local people, especially older members of the community and those with disabilities."
Contractor Anwyl Construction is now on site and the £5.7m build is scheduled for completion in the autumn of 2016.
The development is the third extra care scheme being built by Wales & West Housing, and follows the Nant y Mor extra care scheme in Denbighshire, and Llys Jasmine in Flintshire.
Simon Inkson, the council's head of housing, joined Councillor Brown, WWH development and housing staff and ward councillor, Peter Harris on a tour of the site earlier this week.
WWH is now working with the council to consult with local residents over the naming of the scheme.
