Shropshire fall woman, 68, died of bleed on brain
A Shropshire woman died after suffering bleeding on the brain from a fall down stairs at a care home, a coroner ruled.
Susan Ann Titley, 68, of Yockleton Grange Care Home, Yockleton, near Shrewsbury, died at Royal Stoke University Hospital on January 17.
Her inquest heard that she had most likely fallen down stairs at the home.
Shropshire Coroner John Ellery read a statement from Sue Garner, who works at the home, which said she had heard a "bang" at around 8.30am on January 12.
Mrs Garner then found Ms Titley at the bottom of the stairs with blood coming from her mouth.
An ambulance was called and Ms Titley was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for checks.
A CT scan was performed and hospital staff took the decision to transfer her to Royal Stoke University Hospital at 5.36pm.
Ms Titley was admitted to the intensive care unit and another CT scan was performed, which revealed she had suffered a subdural haematoma – bleeding on the brain – and fractures to her spine. Mr Ellery heard that it was decided not to attempt treatment on the grounds of "futility" and Ms Titley died on January 17.
He recorded a conclusion of accidental death as a result of a head injury caused by a fall.
Ms Titley's cousin, Graham Edwards, spoke during the inquest to praise the care she had received at the home. He said: "We were extremely happy with the way she was cared for, and loved, by the members of staff at Yockleton Grange."
The inquest into the cause of her death took place at Shirehall, Shrewsbury, yesterday.
