Shropshire flower club celebrating 50th anniversary
A flower club in Shropshire is enjoying the sweet smell of success as it celebrates its 50th anniversary.
Market Drayton Flower Club was formed in 1965 and two of the founding members – Audrey Little and Prim Heath – are still part of the club today.
The club now has 40 members and is appealing for more to join the group.
Over the years, members have enjoyed various activities, including visits from expert demonstrators, workshops and coffee mornings.
Sarah Morgan, a member of the group, said: "We are a forward looking club and we keep meetings to the evening so people who work can pop along.
"We have started to hold events that children can join in now and introducing practical workshops they can come along and have a go.
"Anyone can come along to a meeting if they want to join – membership is £26 for the year.
"I think the group has been successful and lasted 50 years because there is a group of enthusiastic ladies at the heart of the club – and we keep introducing more events to the calendar.
"We are hoping the next phase of the club will be encourage more people to pop along - whatever their age. There is something for everyone.
"Although it is a flower club, a lot of people who come along don't arrange but love to sit and watch the demonstrator and have a cup of tea after.
"We have had some very entertaining speakers and it is a great evening out.
"The demonstrators do about five to nine arrangements and they are raffled off at the end of the evening.
"The club is friendship through flowers."
The group meets on the fourth Monday of every month at the Beacon Centre in Market Drayton.
To celebrate the club's 50-year history, members will hold a commemorative event on May 14. It will be an open demonstration at the Festival Drayton Centre in Market Drayton in aid of Severn Hospice.
National demonstrator Nick Grounds will be presenting his demonstration "F to the Power of 2". Tickets are £10 and available from box office on (01630) 654444.
The next flower club meeting will be at the Beacon Centre in Market Drayton on March 23 at 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome.
