A popular 10k race has sold out in record time more than two months before it is due to be held, organisers have revealed.

About 2,300 runners have signed up to take part in Market Drayton 10k on May 10. The surge in interest has been put down to the event picking up two awards which organisers say has given the run extra publicity.

The run was crowned the UK's best race by Runners World magazine at the end of last year, beating contestants including the Great North Run and the London Marathon. It was also awarded the title of the number one 10K in the UK for the third year running.

Tim Becket, race director said: "The event is now full which is fantastic to see.

"It also makes planning so much easier as we have exact figures to work to.

"This is a new record for us as our total for the day will be 2,300, beating the previous record of 2,200 runners.

"Plus it's the quickest the event has ever sold out."

The race was launched in 2004 and attracted 125 entries. It was initially organised with support from Muller, but after a number of years a separate committee was created and soon became the biggest 10k in the West Midlands.

The race operates a free transfer system allowing those who have booked a place to swop with someone who is unregistered if they can no longer take part in the event. There are also still places available for the children's fun run.

The current course record is 30 minutes 39 seconds which was set by Chris Davies in 2013, and organisers encourage budding runners to beat the total with the chance of winning a £50 prize for those who do.
