Measures to stop travellers in Shifnal
Fed-up councillors are set to take action to stop travellers returning to a patch of land on the outskirts of Shifnal.
Plans are being put in place to plough up verges along the B4379 Newport Road after an illegal traveller camp appeared along the road.
The site is often frequented by travellers but now Shifnal Town Council has written to Shropshire Council to see if it can plough up the roadside to prevent them from returning.
A similar tactic has already been used along verges close to the Welcome Break service station on the edge of Shifnal, which was previously frequented by travellers.
The visits have been stopped on that particular patch of land since the ploughing was completed.
Councillor Kevin Turley, Shropshire councillor for Shifnal North, said: "This is something we wrote about together as a town council with respect to ploughing up the verges.
"This time, once they have left the site we will plough up a section of the verge which should hopefully stop them returning.
"It doesn't stop the problem altogether, it just moves it further up the road.
"We've got to try and stop it one way or another."
The travellers arrived on the patch of land close to the motorway bridge on the B4379 two weeks ago.
They were served with notice to leave the site but have not yet left.
Shropshire Council is now taking legal steps to get them removed.
The council is seeking possession of the land through the county court.
Callum McLagan, a spokesman for the council, said: "We can confirm that they have been served notice and we're waiting to hear a firm date from the courts."
Shropshire Council have also been providing the travellers with plastic bags in which they can put rubbish to be collected, to prevent mess on the area while they are in place.
