Prisoner on run after Shropshire stab death

A prisoner who stabbed to death a fellow inmate during a cookery class at a Shropshire young offenders institute is on the run.

Maurice Travis, 33, was jailed for life in 1999 after he pleaded guilty to the murder of 17-year-old Alan Averall at Stoke Heath Young Offenders Institute, near Market Drayton.

Travis, originally from Manchester, stabbed his victim three times with a knife after a row over a piece of chocolate cake.

Greater Manchester Police said Travis absconded on Wednesday while on temporary licence in the Werneth area of Oldham.

He is described as being white, 5ft 9in tall and has short cropped brown hair.

He was wearing black jeans, black jacket with white motif on top of left shoulder and white trainers.
