Leia, who is in Year Six at Market Drayton Junior School, has won the school's first ever poetry recital competition.

For the past few months youngsters have been practising their poetry reading and brushing up on their verse.

Headteacher Tim Hayward said the competition was tough, with 11-year-old Leia eventually being crowned the winner.

He said: "The poetry recital competition was open to all the children in the school, in Alexandra Road. The suggestion came from one of our governors, John Cole, who also sponsored the event. Any child who wanted to participate was given a poem and they were also asked to choose a poem of their choice. We had heats within the school and then the final eight performed in an assembly in front of the entire school. They were all brilliant and all the children in the audience really enjoyed listening."

Mr Hayward said the children in first, second and third place were awarded a book token for their efforts, with Leia presented with the trophy.
