Anger over closure of busy Telford road

The closure of a busy road in Telford is causing havoc for people in a nearby village lane, a resident has claimed.

Richard Long, who lives in Church Street, Hadley, has said he is flabbergasted at the traffic in the area caused by the closure of Trench Lock this week.

The road is closed as Severn Trent Water carries out repairs, which are set to last for up to five days.

The work started on Tuesday, and led to a huge traffic jam during rush hour.

Mr Long said there were no diversion signs and people were shouting at each other through car windows.

He said: "It's a matter of time before something goes wrong and someone gets hurt.

"It took my wife 20 minutes to drive up to the traffic lights at Waterloo Road in Ketley. That's a trip of about half a mile – it's ridiculous.

"I've spoken to the council and the police and no one seems to be doing anything about it. They are like ostriches burying their heads in the sand.

"Drivers were shouting at each other through their windows and no one was letting people pull out.

"It took my wife ages just to pull out of her own drive."

Charlotte Dade, spokeswoman for Telford & Wrekin Council, said: "We have been informed that a number of signs relating to the closure around Trench Lock have been causing some confusion.

"This closure is due to works being carried out by Severn Trent Water and we have informed them and their signing contractor of the issue and asked them to rectify this as soon as possible."

Sarah-Jane O'Keefe, spokeswoman for Severn Trent Water, said: "The local highways authority came to look at our diversion and drove around it and they did not find any problems with it.

"We are doing the work as there is a development for 10 new homes and we need to do a crossover, which is putting a pipe across the road to supply to the new homes."
