Rowing club members fume over Bridgnorth parking fines

Councillors will discuss the future of controversial parking meters in Bridgnorth next week.

Bridgnorth Rowing Club has been in talks with the council for two years after the meters were put in Severn Park, Low Town.

The club, which has previously threatened legal action against the town council over the matter, has claimed its members and visitors are being wrongly fined.

The cameras take pictures of a car's registration when they enter Severn Park and issue £35 charges to those who have not paid, or sometimes have inputted their registration number incorrectly.

The charges can rise to £70 after two weeks and can even lead to a court summons.

In a report to the council club, president David Walker said: "The right of way for members and all our visitors is a legal right of way and is not one that has been granted by the council.

"In order to comply with the law any white listed vehicles must include all our members' cars and regular visitors who park within our land.

"It must also be flexible on the time available for notification."

Discussions were held between the club and the council in April 2011 following concerns about the parking system.

Town clerk Anne Wilson said the council had asked for a response from Creative Parking Solutions Ltd by the end of November.

The issues will be discussed at the council's property and grounds committee meeting on Tuesday.
