Bridger, 47, was cut by another inmate with a makeshift knife earlier this year.

Convicted murderer and rapist Juvinal Ferreira, 24, attacked Bridger with a knife fashioned out of a razor at the top security Wakefield Prison, West Yorkshire, in July.

Now Bridger has reportedly told lawyers to get a payout for emotional and physical distress he claims he suffered. He is not believed to have demanded a set amount but similar cases have landed thousands of pounds.

Bridger abducted five-year-old April as she played with friends near her home in on the Bryn-y-Gog estate in Machynlleth, Mid Wales, in October last year.

The former slaughterhouse worker has never revealed what he did with April's remains, although skull fragments were found in his fireplace.

Bridger was given a whole-life sentence in May by trial judge Mr Justice Griffith Williams after a jury took four hours to find him guilty following a month-long trial. The one-time lifeguard, who was also caught downloading child porn on his computer, claimed he accidentally ran over April and in the ensuing panic could not remember what he did with her body.

Ferreira was sentenced to a second life sentence at Leeds Crown Court and had five years added to his minimum term, meaning he will not be released before 2036.

Ferreira, who was brought up in Gambia,, admitted wounding with intent.

He and other life prisoners had talked about attacking Bridger to make him reveal the whereabouts of April's body, police were told.
