The Winstanstow under-fives play group, along with Winstanstow Primary School infants and juniors, also played host to a European eagle owl, and African owl and a falcon.

They were brought in by Mark Southall, from the Battlefield Falconry Centre of Shrewsbury yesterday.

Playgroup leader Claire Ray organised the event, with funding from the school to teach children about nature.

She said: "We've been looking at animals this term and organised for the Battlefield Falconry Centre to come out.

"He brought each bird out on a glove, one at a time, to show the children and told them about their diet and little bit about each one," she said.

"They were told how to stroke them correctly.

"They were stunned at the size and colour of the European Eagle Owl.

"He said if you say 'flap your wings' it will, so they did and it opened its wings and they also saw it being fed.

Ms Ray added: "The children all got a feather at the end to take home – not off the birds that were there, of course."
