Sophie serves up French fare in Shrewsbury
A taste of France has come to Shrewsbury Market Hall with the opening of an authentic crêperie.
Les Crêpes De Sophie, specialising in traditionally made French crêpes and Belgian waffles, has been launched by Frenchwoman Sophie Carron and her English partner Mathew Hocking.
Also on the menu at the colourful cafe and takeaway are authentic milkshakes made with real ice cream, Welsh Fairtrade tea, including Les Crêpes de Sophie own breakfast blend, locally roasted coffee and artisan cider and Belgian beer.
After 10 years working as an English teacher in Northern France, Sophie decided to swap her chalk for a spatula and move to England to follow her passion for crêpes.
"Crêpes have been a passion of mine since I was a little girl," she said. "In fact the first thing I ever cooked was a crêpe.
"In Northern France crêpes were always part of our days out, family get-togethers and Christmas markets and they were often the highlight of the day."
Mathew said: "In our shop we have created an atmosphere for people to relax, enjoy a crêpe and, if they want, they can speak French with Sophie – she's starting to forget! We've done quite a few farmers' markets and events in preparation for the shop, including Newtown Food Festival and Ludlow Food Festival where we were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm for authentic French crepes and waffles."
All crêpes are made fresh using local ingredients.
Les Crêpes De Sophie is on the first floor of the Market Hall, in Claremont Street, Shrewsbury.
Sophie will also be selling crêpes and waffles at the Spooktacular Halloween event in The Quarry, Shrewsbury, on Saturday, October 26.
