The farmer called the fire brigade when he saw smoke coming from one of his outbuildings at Sugden Farm in Rodington, near Telford, just after 9.30am yesterday.
He then jumped into a loader and pulled the blazing crop out into the open to stop the fire spreading.
Craig Jackson, watch manager at Wellington Fire Station said: "When we arrived the farmer had pulled it all out of the barn which prevented it spreading to another 400 tons next to it.
"We moved it into a different location in a field to spread it out and damp it down.
"The cause is still under investigation."
The incident was over by noon.
