Staffies pounce on pet dog along Shropshire Union Canal
A dog owner has called for the law to be changed after his pet was attacked by two terriers while on a walk at a Shropshire beauty spot.
Ray Thomas, of Market Drayton, was walking with his dog Jilly along the Shropshire Union Canal in the town when he says two Staffordshire terriers sprang from their leads and attacked him and his pet.
The attack was so severe that Jilly, a Yorkie-cross who only has one eye, had to be rushed to the Tern Veterinary Group, in Stafford Street, where she underwent an operation which required about 60 stitches.
Now Mr Thomas is calling for the law to be changed after reporting the incident to the police only to be told dogs attacking other dogs is not a criminal matter.
Mr Thomas, 80, said he had to pay a £750 vet bill and can no longer trace the owner of the terriers who has left on his narrow boat.
He said: "I tried to report the incident to the police, but a very embarrassed spokesperson informed me that dog-on-dog attacks are not a criminal matter.
"How are dog walkers supposed to protect their pets? Surely the law needs to be changed."
