Top British artists' work in Shrewsbury auction

Work by famous British artists, including Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and David Hockney, will go under the hammer at an auction in Shrewsbury next month.

Following the death of art dealer Jane Griffiths, her stock of furniture, original oils, water colours, prints, photographs and will be sold by Halls auctioneers in Shrewsbury on June 12.

Many of the pieces are expected to attract interest from across the world when they go up for sale at Halls' recently-opened Battlefield auction house on June 12.

The collection, which runs into 227 lots, belonged to Ms Griffiths, who developed her business from Gallery 17 in Shrewsbury over 20 years.

Four works by Damien Hirst will go under the hammer, including 'I Get Around', a signed 2002 etching valued at up to £1,200.

Tracey Emin is represented by two works, including a deckchair and 'Sleep Again', a signed 2010 etching valued at £300 to £500.

Two works by David Hockney also feature in the collection, including 'Sunflowers', a signed 1995 etching, which is expected to fetch around £2,000.

Meanwhile, three works by Howard Hodgkin include 'Red Palm', a signed 1987 lithograph valued at around £2,500. Dame Elizabeth Frink, who died in 1993, has four of her works in the auction, including 'Horse and Rider', a signed 1976 lithograph valued at around £900.

Seven works by the artist Sir Terry Frost will be sold, including a signed screenprint titled 'Spring Spiral' at up to £1,000,

Other well known names of the British art world, whose work is featured, include Bridget Riley and Henry Moore.

Keely Connor, from Halls, who catalogued the auction, said: "Jane had a very good eye and knew when to buy lesser known artists' work and wait for the rest of us to catch up."
