A public park often described as Oswestry's "jewel in the crown" now has a special crown of its own.

Town council chiefs have unveiled a new feature at Cae Glas Park - a specially designed crown-shaped planter.

The planter is the centrepiece of the newly created Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Garden in the park.

The planter has been donated by Oswestry firm the British Ironworks Centre and was unveiled yesterday. Clive Knowles from the British Ironworks Centre said: "We were asked to create a crown to celebrate the Queen's jubilee which would be suitable for Cae Glas Park.

"It is a pretty big and impressive feature, about five feet wide and about six feet tall.

"We have donated it at no cost because we want to support the town."

Betty Gull, Oswestry In Bloom committee chairman, said roses would be planted.

She said: "We wanted to try to come up with something for the jubilee and thought a crown would be apt. I think is a very impressive centrepiece.

"Hopefully we will have a few roses blooming when the In Bloom judges come in July.

"The town council was not looking for the work for free and it is very generous of the company to donate it.
