The incident happened yesterday when the four were due to have joined 169 other Year 11 pupils to mark the last day of lessons with a fancy dress party and buffet.

Ludlow CE School headteacher Phil Poulton said: "Tuesday was the last day before the school's Intensive Revision Programme began. We encourage the students to arrive in fancy dress, and the day ends with a buffet presented by the staff."

He added: "Sadly, four students arrived at school whom we suspected had consumed alcohol, either on the way to school or the previous evening. Parents were contacted immediately and the students either walked home or were collected by their parents before lessons."
