Market Drayton Hockey Club played against York University in the game on Saturday to remember Tom Chevins, from Market Drayton, who died when his BMW left the A53 and struck a tree in December.

A minute's silence was held in memory of Tom before the match between his university team and his home town team.

Younger brothers Jordan, 20, Alfie, 16, and Harry, 14, took part in the match, whilst their mum Heather supported them from the sidelines. The game ended 7-7.

Mrs Chevins said: "The support was over- whelming. My congratulations go to the first team on their success and the memorial match was a fitting tribute to Tom. Thank you to everyone involved."

Shortly before the memorial match Market Drayton Hockey Club secured promotion to the West Midlands Premiere Division League with a 5-3 win over Bloxwich Hockey Club.

Jordan Chevins scored twice and said the league game and the memorial game were both better than he could have expected.

He said: "It was the biggest turnout I'd ever seen for a hockey match. The weather was beautiful and the result was great as everyone wanted to win for Tom."

Following the games, which were played at Keele University, Market Drayton Hockey Club held its end-of-season dinner and presentation at the Fours Alls Inn.

Jordan Chevins and hockey captain for York University Sam Unsworth both gave a speech about Tom and the memorial match.

Jordan added: "We had a hockey club dinner and all the teams from the Market Drayton Hockey were there. York University hockey players joined us as special guests on the night as well.
