Shropshire Easter events off as freeze tightens grip
Preparations for Easter have been hit by the cold weather as further snow fell in Shropshire overnight.
And parts of the county have been warned to expect more snow today as temperatures struggle to get above freezing point.
A number of events have been cancelled, including Weston Park Transport Show. Circus Funtasia has cancelled shows at Shrewsbury's West Mid Showground.
People living in rural areas have seen roads blocked by snow, while proceedings at Shrewsbury Crown Court were delayed yesterday when Recorder Martin Hurst was held up by snowy weather on his journey from Nottingham.
But the Met Office has withdrawn weather warnings for heavy snow which were in force across Shropshire over the weekend.
Graeme Anderson, a spokesman for the Met Office, said: "There will be widespread, penetrating night frosts and bitter easterly winds throughout the region."
Organisers of the Transport Show, which was due to have been held on Saturday and Sunday, decided to postpone the event after carrying out a ground inspection yesterday. The show will be held later in the year.
Circus Funtasia was due to be performing two shows a day at the West Mid Showground in Shrewsbury between Wednesday and Bank Holiday Monday. But after the circus had to cancel planned shows in Oswestry bosses decided to stay there this weekend to stage replacement shows rather than move on to Shrewsbury.
Tracy Jones, director and ringmistress, said they would be looking at putting on shows in Shrewsbury later in the year.
Bridgnorth Choral Society's Easter concert this weekend has been cancelled. The concert was due to take place on March 23 at Bridgnorth Baptist Church.
An annual tag rugby tournament has been postponed. The tournament, organised by the police, had been due to see 14 schools from Shrewsbury and Shifnal competing at the pitches at Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology today.
People living on an estate near Lake Vyrnwy say a road over the dam is packed with icy snow, leaving them stuck. Resident Mike Duggleby, said the road on the dam has not been cleared.
A spokesman for Severn Trent said they had not cleared the road in recent years and had no plans to do so as it was not a public right of way.
