Buildwas Bridge, which carries the A4169 Buildwas to Much Wenlock road over the River Severn, will be shut for up to two weeks while essential repairs are carried out.

The work, which started on Saturday, means long diversions for commuters and tourists as well as hundreds of pupils travelling to and from William Brookes School.

It comes while nearby Jiggers Bank is also closed until at least the summer because of a landslip in November.

The work at Buildwas will involve replacing the bridge's expansion joints. Shropshire Council said the work was necessary because the existing joints were beginning to break up.

The council hoped to have all work completed this week, which is half term for the school.
