Danielle Brown, who was awarded an MBE in the New Year's honours list, spoke to pupils at Grove School in Market Drayton about how important it is to challenge themselves.

Yesterday's visit was part of the 'Be the best you can be' programme, which aims to carry on the legacy of the London 2012 Olympics. The Telford-based athlete won gold at both the London and Beijing Paralympics.

She said: "I didn't have anything like this when I was in school. Preparing pupils for the future is so fundamental and to do it by breaking down in steps how they will achieve their goals is great.

"At this age you can really inspire them and it is nice because I started off in the same position as they did. The kids asked some really good questions and a lot of them were about disabilities."

Olivia Lockett, 13, of Pipe Gate, said: "She described her disability and how she overcame it, I feel like disabled people have to overcome more obstacles."

Alfie Birch, 13, of Market Drayton, said he had learned that 'you should always focus on what you're doing no matter what' and Emily Williams, 12, said she felt inspired to do more sport.

Oliver Williamson, 12, of Market Drayton, said: "I had watched her on the TV at the Olympics so the fact she was coming in was a big bonus."
