Paralympics medal winner Mickey Bushell is welcomed by Newport pupils
Shropshire's Paralympic hero Mickey Bushell relived the moment he clinched his gold medal with youngsters at a school in the county.
Mr Bushell was cheered on by students at Church Aston Infant School in Newport as the wheelchair sprinter, who won gold in the T53 100 metres at the London 2012 Paralympics, watched his race back during a special assembly held yesterday.
The star answered questions from both pupils and parents before giving each youngster a signed picture.
Chris Robinson, from the school, said: "As you can imagine the children were all very excited to see him and were able to watch a recording of his silver medal win at Beijing in 2008 as well as his gold medal race at London 2012.
"Mickey was happy to answer lots of the children's and parents' questions about his career, training schedule and how it all began.
"He recalled the noise of the crowd as he entered the stadium in London and how he focused on his race and didn't know he had won until after he'd crossed the line.
"Everyone was in awe of his gold medal which was very big, shiny and heavy."
Mr Robinson said the school will now look into ways to raise funds for the 'Get Kids Going' charity which Mickey supports.
He said: "Every child had their photograph taken with him and he was happy to sign them all. We now hope to raise some money to support his chosen charity Get Kids Going which also helped him."
