Members of South Staffordshire Council's planning committee decided to go against the planning officers' recommendation to approve the proposals for the park in Weston-under-Lizard at a meeting last night.

After they voted, there was cheering in the public gallery where 20 or so residents were sitting and standing.

The plans included 89 lodges at White Sitch Wood.

Dee Crow, who lives in Beighterton Lane in nearby Blymhill, said it had been a long, hard battle, but she felt relieved with the result.

She said: "I can't tell you how relieved the residents all are after the plans were refused. We've all been worried for so long about this."

Shifnal North councillor Gordon Tonkinson, who was also at the meeting, added: "The traffic would have come into Shropshire and we weren't happy about that."

Developers said the park would have created 30 part-time jobs and boost business for existing shops and restaurants.

But a protest letters and a petition signed by 130 local people warned of extra noise, light and traffic along with damage to wildlife and peace and quiet.

Currently the land is being used only by an angling club.

During the meeting, leader of the council Brian Cox said: "The site is as beautiful as any in Staffordshire."
