£1m facelift project at Shrewsbury College complete
A £1 million refurbishment project at Shrewsbury College has been completed.
The college's latest facelift will see students who are studying electrical installation, and plumbing and gas, at the college's London Road campus benefitting from improved teaching and training areas.
Work was started on the project during the Easter half-term in April.
The teaching areas will service full-time and part-time students as well as apprentices.
They include two new assessment areas for tradesmen requiring certification to practice their trades safely and competently.
The building also houses a computer aided design training area, three dedicated classrooms and a modern open plan workshop, with a total of 24 training bays.
It comes after the £3 million refurbishment of the college's engineering and construction centre, which was officially opened by former Tomorrow's World presenter, Kate Bellingham, in February.
In September, the college was granted planning permission for further improvements to its London Road campus. The proposals for a three-storey extension form the first phase of work to be paid for with £6 million of Government grants.
It will see a restaurant, training kitchens and four classrooms created. There will also improved access and a new lift.
A design and access statement to Shropshire Council, in support of the scheme, said: "The current application proposes long overdue work investing around £6 million to create modern and up-to-date learning facilities in the aftermath of the failed co-location scheme with Shrewsbury Sixth Form College."
College bosses said the extension would mean additional catering services for students and improvements to business, education, and counselling services as well as additional classrooms.
In a letter approving the proposals, Shropshire Council planners said the development would provide 'additional and improved service for an established college providing higher level education.'
Shrewsbury College will hold its next London Road advice event from 4.30pm until 7.30pm on November 14. Visitors will be able to view the improved facilities and talk to students.
