Shropshire libraries get literary with poetry events
Libraries across Shropshire are helping the county get in touch with its creative side as part of a special poetry month.
Poetry readings and special events will be taking place in libraries up and down Shropshire throughout the month, including one in Ludlow this afternoon between 2.30pm and 4pm, another in Bishop's Castle on October 17 and one at Ellesmere Library on October 20.
As part of the initiative, a Wilfred Owen afternoon will be held at Oswestry Library on Tuesday to celebrate one of the county's most famous sons. The event will take place between 1pm and 5pm.
Other events taking place later in the month include a poetry workshop at Bishop's Castle Library on October 17 and a Stand Up for Poetry session at Ellesmere Library on October 20.
The poetry month will be rounded off on October 31 at Market Drayton Library with a Halloween-themed event involving a Scary Poem Collage and Storytime.
Writers
Young readers and writers can enter a poetry competition which will run throughout the month.
The theme for the event is 'Stars', and prizes will be awarded in three age categories, with all winning entries being published online.
All of the events follow on from the celebrations on Thursday, which was National Poetry Day.
To mark the occasion, libraries in Church Stretton and Shrewsbury and the Rock Spring Community Centre in Ludlow all held special events.
Steve Charmley, Shropshire Council's Cabinet member responsible for libraries, said he hoped as many people as possible would get involved with the forthcoming events.
