Gavin Finch, who lived alone with his dog, died in his flat in Longlands Lane, Market Drayton, on or shortly before April 20 last year.

Toxicity reports read at the inquest in Wem yesterday said Mr Finch's body contained 172 milligrams of alcohol and traces of several drugs including methadone and diazepam.

The inquest heard Mr Finch was last seen alive on April 19 by his mother, Carol Davis, who was told by her son that he would see her the following day.

Giving evidence, Sergeant Niall Parker said there did not appear to be any evidence of Mr Finch intending to take his own life.

He said on April 19 Mr Finch was seen in Market Drayton carrying four cans of lager. "The following morning his mum noticed his curtains were still closed, which she was surprised at because he was usually an early riser. She left it until about 11am to check on him.

"She knocked on the door and there was no reply.

"She let herself in with her key and found him lying on the bed with his dog lying on the bed beside him."

John Ellery, coroner for Mid and North West Shropshire, recorded a verdict of accidental death.
