Coroner John Ellery, yesterday recorded verdicts of accidental death on Gareth Tyson, 23, of Hodnet, and Jack Speight, 22, of Market Drayton.

After hearing police evidence and eyewitness accounts Mr Ellery said he recorded as a fact that the black Volkswagen Golf Mr Tyson and Mr Speight were in was travelling at about 100mph when it left the A442 at Peplow, near Hodnet, late on April 30.

But he added drugs and alcohol played no part in the accident, confirming toxicology reports on both men came back negative for drink and illegal drugs.

The tragedy happened at about 10.50pm as they were making their way back from a gym at Telford. Both were confirmed dead at the scene by paramedics.

Mr Ellery said Mr Tyson had been driving the turbo charged Golf GTI and Mr Speight was in the front passenger seat.

He said: "There is no evidence a phone was being used at the time and tragically speed alone appears to be the main factor. Clearly, this was a tragic accident."

Crash investigator Constable Ian Edwards told the inquest in Wem he believed the Golf had just overtaken a silver Vauxhall Corsa when it clipped kerb stones at the side of the road, causing it to fishtail before it hit trees.
