The Forestry Commission will be bringing in the charges at Haughmond Hill, on the outskirts of Shrewsbury, which has about 250,000 visitors each year.

Consultation has now started on what the charges will be, with tourists being asked whether they would be willing to pay up to £3 or more to park there.

George Sharp, recreation ranger for the Forestry Commission at the site, said the consultation was due to run until the end of this month, with a decision due in October.

Mrs Sharp said the money raised by the new charges will be spent on maintaining and improving Haughmond Hill for its many visitors.

She said: "We want to provide our visitors with the best possible facilities. However, maintaining our sites to a good standard needs to be paid for."
